What to expect from Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S22 this year

Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S22 series, which is expected to be released in February, according to South Korean media, is having the tech world buzzing about the new features that will come with it.

The rumor mill says that the phone will debut on February 8th and here is the list of possible features on this phone.

Display

According to gsmarena, the standard S22 5G will rock a 2X Dynamic AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and HDR10+ support.

The glass front of the smartphone should support Gorilla Glass Victus protection. While the standard version will have a maximum brightness of 1300 nits, Leaker Ishan Agarwal, in association with 91Mobiles, claimed that the Plus version of the series will support a maximum brightness of 1750 nits, which is well above 1300. nits from the Samsung Galaxy S21 Plus and 1500 nits from the S21 Ultra.

The screen will use LTPO technology to switch between a 1Hz to 120Hz refresh rate, which will be useful for saving battery power.

Drums

Agarwal leaks further suggest that the S22 Plus will support 45-watt fast charging. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard of the phone having a faster charging speed.

However, according to Techradar, recent leaks suggest that the faster speed will only be available on the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra smartphone. It will definitely be good news if the rest of the S22 series smartphones also get this upgrade.

To put things into perspective, the Samsung Galaxy S21 series has a charging speed of 25 watts. So the upgrade will be about double in speed.

In the meantime, this massive speed upgrade may not be enough for Samsung since its main rival, the OnePlus 10 Pro, for example, offers 80-watt charging. Meanwhile Xiaomi 12 Pro went up to 120 Watts charging.

Again, 45 Watts might just be a good balance that stays fast and there will be less chance of battery degradation with faster charging.

Another interesting theory suggests that Samsung is not focusing on increasing charging speed due to its biggest rival Apple offering 27 Watts charging speed. It will be truly surprising if Apple chooses to go for 45 Watts in the upcoming iPhone 14. Again, it’s Apple who loves the drama. So we can expect anything.

The phone is expected to have a 5000 mAh battery.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is expected to receive the biggest design update.

Leakstar Agarwal has shared a render of the device which shows off a quad camera setup on the back. He also shared some key specs and features of the device with MySmartPrice.

The phone is said to have a 108MP Super Clear lens as its main camera. Also, it will have a 12MP ultra-wide camera and a 10MP phone lens, which will likely offer 3x and 10x optical zoom support. The camera will support 12-bit HDR recording and will also support auto frame rate.

With a punch-hole cut out at the top middle of the screen, there will be a 40MP front camera, according to Agarwal.

Other Leaks

As this will be Samsung’s flagship device this year, it is expected to have an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance. Another leak that caught our attention is that Samsung will ship an S-Pen with the S22 Ultra, similar to its Note series.

As for processors, Samsung is expected to use its recently announced Exynos 2200 chip and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip in the upcoming Galaxy S22 lineup.

Another leak also suggests that Samsung may be opting for 1TB storage with its S22 lineup.

So far this phone feels like brand new premium material. Keep in mind that these are just speculations, although at this point most predictions should match.
