The Galaxy S22 has leaked a lot, but there’s only a little you can tell from the renders. For example, it turns out that Samsung has created a “new material” to use in the product – a material made from the plastic of discarded fishing nets.
Samsung announces that it will soon “incorporate ocean-related recycled plastics” throughout its product line, and the first example will be the Galaxy devices shown at the Unpacked event this Wednesday, February 9. It is not yet clear to what extent the material will be used or in which parts of the products; Samsung isn’t explicit about how it fits into the build of any of the devices.
Citing a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations which indicates that 640,000 tonnes of fishing nets are thrown into the oceans every year, Samsung says these “ghost nets” pose a threat to life. marine and coral reefs. “These abandoned fishing nets are upsetting the delicate balance of our environment at an alarming rate,” the company wrote in a statement. blog post. “Collecting and reusing these nets are essential first steps in keeping our oceans clean as well as preserving the planet and our collective future.”
It’s a small first step, but one that Samsung will no doubt try to emphasize more on Wednesday when it launches the new Galaxy devices. The event begins at 10 a.m. ET.
