Samsung’s Mobile Communications business has established Galaxy for the Planet as a platform for sustainable development. The campaign aims to reduce its environmental footprint and reduce resource depletion from production to disposal of its Galaxy products.
Its initial set of goals, which aim to be achieved by 2025, include: incorporating recycled materials into all new mobile products, eliminating all plastics in packaging, reducing standby power consumption of all smartphone chargers to less than 0.005W and the goal of zero waste to landfill. .

Reusing ocean related plastics
One of its main innovations is a new material that can be integrated into Galaxy devices. This material is made from ocean-bound plastics like fishing nets, of which 640,000 tons are abandoned and thrown away every year. It’s one of the world’s biggest sources of plastic waste, which has been lying around in the oceans for centuries. It traps marine life, damages coral reefs and other habitats, and even ends up in people’s food and water sources.
Samsung has transformed this discarded item into a new high-performance material called polyamide resins, which are made with a minimum of 20% reused fishing nets. This new material matches Samsung’s high-quality standards for smartphone technology while preserving the world’s oceans.
South Korean celebrities and #TeamGalaxy ambassadors BTS have been advocating for the campaign, even appearing in a video calling on everyone to work together for a better future. Learn more about the video here.
Galaxy’s greenest device
Samsung products have been redesigned to minimize their impact on the environment throughout their life cycle. To date, the Galaxy S22 series is the most eco-friendly line of devices in Samsung’s smartphone lineup.
The key tray contains polyamide resins, while its speaker module and the internal parts of the power and volume keys are made with post-consumer recycled materials. For the Galaxy S22 Ultra, its S Pen also contains recycled polyamide resins.
Each smartphone case is designed with environmentally friendly and UL-certified materials, such as post-consumer recycled plastics or bio-based substances. The protective film is also made from recycled plastic. In addition, the series’ packaging uses 100% recycled paper.
Reusing ocean-bound plastics is just the first step in Samsung’s mission to tackle the climate crisis. Through this process, Samsung can prevent more than 50 tons of abandoned fishing nets from entering the world’s oceans by the end of 2022.
