Update: New Exynos 2200 chip benchmarks have appeared and they actually beat Snapdragon 8 Gen-1.
The Samsung Galaxy S22 chipset was supposed to be announced on January 11, but instead all we got was silence. However, Samsung says this new chipset will arrive after all, just a bit later than expected.
January 11 was supposed to be the day we saw the announcement of the Exynos 2200, Samsung’s new flagship mobile chipset. However, that date has come and gone without any news, and the original tweet announcing the event has been deleted (via XDA Developers).
After some uncertainty, a Samsung spokesperson has confirmed to Business Korea (via Digital Trends) that the new Exynos chip is still coming, but will be announced with a new phone, most likely referring to the incoming Galaxy S22. So we should expect the Exynos 2200 to be unveiled at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event, scheduled for February 8.
“We plan to unveil the new application processor at the time of the launch of a new Samsung smartphone,” the statement said. The spokesperson added, “there are no issues with the production and performance of the AP”, putting to bed a rumor that had been circulating about the reason for the delay of the new chip.
We originally believed it, because of a tweet from a leaker Dohyun Kim (via SamMobile) that the Exynos 2200 no-show was due to Samsung deciding to drop the chip for the Galaxy S22 series, instead going with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 (which should be found in US models) worldwide.
Normally, users in the UK and other countries would be jealous of the superior performance that Snapdragon Galaxy S-series phones normally get compared to their Exynos counterparts. However, this year there are some reasons why the Exynos builds might actually be superior.
Not only did the leaked graphics benchmarks show that the Exynos 2200 somehow outperformed the powerful Apple A15 Bionic chip in the iPhone 13 series, but it was also rumored to have AMD Radeon RDNA 2 graphics; it’s the same GPU architecture used in the PS5 and Xbox Series X. It’s not something we’ve ever seen in a phone, so for Samsung to introduce it would have been a welcome move; especially for users looking for the best gaming phones.
Gaming is something the Samsung spokesperson also addresses in his statement. “The new GPU should solve the problems of the Exynos 2100,” they said. “We intend to improve our competitiveness by loading GPUs for games in mobile devices.”
Unfortunately, there has been another recent leak that brings bad news for the Galaxy S22, as a leaker says that all three Galaxy S22 models are getting a price hike of $100 each.
The good news is that there are plenty of other things rumored to attract users to the S22 series. The top-end Galaxy S22 Ultra model sees the most popular additions, including a built-in S Pen and improved 108MP photography with a new Super Clear lens. The base S22 and S22 Plus are expected to see a few upgrades though, such as more compact designs and new 50MP main cameras.
There’s less than a month to go until the S22’s supposed launch date of February 8. So it won’t take long to try this phone for ourselves. In the meantime, bookmark our Samsung Galaxy S22 hub for all the latest news and leaks.
