What’s new in the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8?

A lot can happen in a year, especially when it comes to technological advancements, and this year is no exception. The new Galaxy Tab S8 tablets offer some nice improvements over last year’s models.

Galaxy Tab S8 and Tab S8+

Much like the Galaxy S22 and S22+ smartphones, Samsung’s entry-level and mid-range tablet options don’t offer an exciting generational leap. There are the usual performance upgrades (as they are now both powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1). But visually, you might not even be able to tell the difference between these tablets and their predecessors.

The aforementioned processor is paired with up to 12GB of RAM, along with up to 256GB of storage which can be further expanded through the built-in microSD card slot. Battery life is also pretty insignificant here, with the Tab S8 sporting an 8,000mAh cell and the Tab S8+ using a much larger 10,090mAh battery. Plus, you won’t have to worry about slower charging speeds with either of these tablets, as Samsung has implemented its super fast charging reaching rates of up to 45W.

These battery size differences are a little easier to understand when you know that the Tab S8 uses an 11-inch LCD screen, while the Tab S8+ uses a 12.4-inch Super AMOLED panel. And on the bright side, both include an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

From a hardware perspective, other features of the Tab S8 and Tab S8+ include improved front and rear cameras. On the front, we have a 12MP ultra-wide lens that will make it much easier to participate in video calls without looking like you’re recording with a potato. The rear lenses are made up of a 13MP wide-angle sensor with autofocus, along with a 6MP ultra-wide sensor.

Think big with the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra

There’s a new addition to Samsung’s flagship tablet lineup, and it’s here to tackle Apple’s latest iPad Pro head-on. The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra features a massive 14.6-inch Super AMOLED display, with a fast 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. This will deliver an amazing experience whether you’re using DeX or just want to get some real work done. on your tablet, instead of using a laptop or desktop computer.

Speaking of which, Samsung has carried over some of the software tweaks from the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to make multitasking even easier on the Tab S8 Ultra. Simply drag and drop windows to work with multiple windows. Samsung also makes it faster and easier than ever to collaborate between your Galaxy Tab S8 and Galaxy S22. You can take a photo on your phone and have it instantly appear on your new tablet to edit with the included S Pen, for example.

In terms of power, you get the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, just like the rest of the new Samsung devices. But you’ll be able to pair this processor with up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage, which can also be expanded via the built-in microSD card slot. It can truly transform the way you work, whether you’re at home or on the road.

You might notice a small notch at the top of the Tab S8, and it’s for good reason. Samsung has integrated dual front cameras with a 12MP wide-angle sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor. Samsung has introduced a new feature, known as Intelligent Auto-Framing technology, which instantly focuses on the subject of a video call and adjusts when a new person enters the frame, much like center stage of the iPad.

Not too many differences

The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra may stand alone in many ways, but it shares much of the same DNA as the other two options in the Tab S8 line. For one, the Tab S8+ and Ultra feature an in-display fingerprint scanner for added security. The standard Tab S8 still includes a dedicated fingerprint scanner, but instead it’s integrated into the side key (power button).

As expected, all three of these tablets include an S Pen in the box, saving the hassle of buying one after the fact. And the S Pen magnetically connects to the back of your Tab S8, not only providing a place to house the stylus when not in use, but also to keep it charged and close at hand.

The new range of Galaxy Tab S8 options are all compatible with the S Pen BLE stylus and are available in Wi-Fi 6E only or Wi-Fi + 5G versions. All also support Bluetooth v5.2, come with a built-in USB-C 3.2 port, and include four stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos-enabled AKG sound. When it comes to case colors, the Galaxy Tab S8 and Galaxy Tab S8+ are offered in graphite, silver, or rose gold, while the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra is only offered in graphite.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Accessories

All three models of Galaxy Tab S8 come with a Samsung S Pen BLE, but a book cover keyboard, a slim book cover keyboard, a book cover (without keyboard), a protective cover, a view cover of note and a strap cover are each sold separately.

Keep in mind that Wi-Fi + 5G cellular options will require signing up for service with a cellular service provider (such as AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile) and there will be a monthly fee associated with it. If you already have a smartphone with an active cellular data plan, the additional charges will be as low as $10 per month.

Galaxy Tab S8 and Tab S8+ are priced in line with their predecessors. The former starts at $700 for the base model with 128GB, while the larger Tab S8+ costs $900.
