James Gunn Teases Bigger, Darker ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

by James Gunn guardians of the galaxy The series has always been considered the most light-hearted, comedic, and wacky corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even though the stories have presented many significant personal and dramatic stakes.

Despite The Empire Strikes Back establishing the pattern on which much of the franchise’s fare still rests more than 40 years later, not every hit sequel is bound to darken with every passing installment. However, the filmmaker teased during a recent appearance on Deadline’s Nation of Heroes podcast that things are about to get more serious than ever.

“It’s big; it’s so, so big and dark and different from what people might expect. I’m aware that the third movie of most trilogies sucks… not always. I just want to be faithful to the characters, to the story and to give people the conclusion they deserve for the story.

Having confirmed once again that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will mark the end of both his association with the intergalactic adventures group and this particular iteration of the team, Gunn will seek to ensure that he draws a line under his trilogy in the most spectacular and appropriate way possible.

It’s highly unlikely that Marvel Studios will abandon Guardians entirely once Gunn is out of sight, as the characters are simply too popular and marketable to be left sitting on the sidelines collecting dust, but once the trio arrives in May 2023, the cosmic misfits face a new and uncertain future as part of the shared superhero mythology.
