What’s old is new once again and in the mobile phone arena we are seeing the resurgence of flip phones.
These aren’t quite the same phones we’ve seen in the past, but their form dates back to the first mobile phone revolution.

With Samsung leading the pack with their Galaxy Z Flip3, Huawei is on the heels with their neighbor Huawei P50 Pocket.
If you are looking for something from Google, Samsung would be your best bet. You would need some effort to get the Huawei up and running, but they claim that the app gallery is the best fit for your needs.
Having used the Samsung Z Flip3 as the current daily driver, the phone regularly receives many compliments. Even if the crease in the middle is not much of a problem for people who are looking at the phone for the first time.
Huawei seems to have taken some notes and their attempt with the P50 Pocket certainly lives up to the standard hardware. Functionally, the Huawei P50 Pocket aligns with the Z Flip3 and boasts the same processor and GPU (Snapdragon 888 and Adreno 660 respectively). The biggest difference here would be the slightly larger battery with the P50 Pocket receiving a 4000mAh battery compared to the Z Flip3’s 3300mAh battery.
Aesthetically, this is where the two flip phones start to diverge. Samsung has gone for the hugely useful (and larger) secondary screen as the cover screen, Huawei’s attempt mirroring Samsung’s initial forays into flip phone models. It is a touch screen but its size makes it more difficult to fully use the applications. Even looking at notifications can be a chore.
When it comes to overall appearance and shape, the Huawei P50 Pocket is sure to raise eyebrows when placed on a table. In collaboration with Dutch designer Iris Van Herpen, Huawei is looking to pilot and capture some of that weight with potential consumers.
Encased in an extremely bright and shiny casing, the Huawei P50 Pocket is a real fingerprint magnet.
On site, we can see that the inspiration for the Huawei P50 Pocket is certainly greatly inspired by the Samsung Z Flip3. When it comes to opening and closing the two phones, the Z Flip3 takes more effort while the P50 Pocket feels a bit too loose for our liking.
When put together, the two phones seem to want to stay away from each other. We’re kidding, but the Samsung Z Flip3 seems to have stronger magnets that help with the satisfying closing movement.
Overall, the Samsung Z Flip3 is at first glance a better product than the Huawei P50 Pocket. From a hardware standpoint, on paper, Huawei is the superior device, but Samsung is ultimately easier to use with Google services.
All other things being equal, the real focal point would be the huge camera module designs that the phone shares with the P50 Pro.
Its more traditional cousin has four cameras while the P50 Pocket has three. In comparison, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 only has two cameras. But when it comes to camera hardware, users should be well aware at this point that there still needs to be a balance between software and hardware to get the most out of every photo taken.
Even between the P50 Pro and the P50 Pocket, there are differences in how each of them processes the final image. In our quick tests, it appeared that the P50 Pocket picked up color better, appeared warmer and more natural. Take a look for yourself (swipe right for Pocket, swipe left for Pro) –
All in all, still great photos that show that there is always more than meets the eye.
The bottom line here is that when it comes to flip phones, it’s good that there are now more options for fans of the form factor. Whether or not you find yourself in either camp, we can’t wait to see how the next leap of innovation plays out for mobile phones.
The Huawei P50 Pocket will be available from January 22, 2022 at S $ 1548 via Lazada Where Shopee.
